The Renault SYMBIOZ is a prototype prepared for level 4 autonomous driving (the driver can completely disengage from the road and the controls), with a body of very large doors that open facing each other and separated from the windows and an interior inspired by the “living room” of a house. Its management system is designed to connect the vehicle to the domestic power grid and can be managed through artificial intelligence (home automation) from the car to the home or vice versa.

Its body is 4.70 m long, 1.98 m wide and 1.35 m high. The roof is made of polycarbonate and glass to allow maximum brightness. The bonding surfaces are enamelled. It has no central pillar. The panels of the lower part of the body are made of carbon fiber, painted in copper color. When the doors open, the seats pivot towards the passengers to “invite” them to take a seat.
It has traction on the rear wheels by means of two electric motors, one connected to each wheel. The maximum power they give is 671 hp and can speed up the SYMBIOZ in “less than six seconds” from zero to 100 km / h. The capacity of the batteries is 72 kWh, gives a range of 500 km and can be recharged at 80% of its capacity in 20 minutes. Renault says performance and load capacity will improve until 2030, due date to launch a production car based on this prototype. Batteries are charged by induction.
The passenger compartment has four seats that can be turned to face passengers. The idea is that, while the vehicle is at home or while the autonomous driving is activated, be as close as possible to a living room that can be used as another room of the house. To do this, everything is connected to the home automation: cameras to see who knocks on the door, to program household appliances or use the multimedia system. The house in which Renault thinks as a “symbiosis” of this car is also a prototype housing designed for the brand, 21 meters long, seven meters high and eight wide, with 120 square meters of surface (21 x 8 = 168, so we assume that it does not have a completely rectangular plant).
Renault has used in the car various materials that are also present in the home: wood, porcelain, felt or marble, among others, “with high technology production and finishing processes to ensure that they have the right weight and shape”.
Renault offers several possibilities of use. If there are no planned trips in the next 48 hours, the recharging system returns power to the house network and leaves only a sufficient remnant for a small displacement. If on the other hand a long trip is planned the following morning, the batteries will be recharged to their maximum capacity during the night, gradually turning off the air conditioning in the house. Finally, it is also possible to take advantage of the energy stored in the batteries to supply power to the home in times of maximum demand. In case of a blackout, the vehicle acts as a generator automatically. Everything is managed through a screen inside the house or through the control panel of the car.
The brake lights vary in intensity (according to Renault, “produce a variety of visual effects) depending on the braking force. The third brake light is placed on a rear baffle on the roof. The tires have radii inspired by those of a bicycle tire and the tires, with a “special narrowness” to maximize the rolling efficiency, are developed by Michelin. The Renault exterior logos are illuminated in different colors depending on the driving mode activated.
On the dashboard there is an OLED screen 80 cm wide, curved, extending from the front of the driver to the passenger. When autonomous driving is activated, the pedals and steering wheel retract 15 cm and the seats are placed in a more comfortable position. A small screen is visible when this happens to inform the driver of the main parameters.
Also during the autonomous driving, a metal table with marble surface unfolds between the four occupants (according to Renault is reminiscent of the first Espace of 1980). Each passenger has a small touch screen on the seat belt to handle comfort and entertainment options.
The SYMBIOZ multimedia system is equipped with artificial intelligence and designed to recognize passengers when they are seated. On the go, you can configure your settings (playback of multimedia content or music, temperature, seat position) as well as allowing you to connect to different devices in the house through Internet of Things (IoT), including video surveillance .
The SYMBIOZ has three driving modes which are selected by pressing the Renault logo on the steering wheel. “Classic mode”, in which the passengers are oriented forward and the vehicle adapts its operation to give more comfort; “Dynamic mode”, similar to the previous one, but the seats increase the lumbar support and the engine, the direction and the chassis respond more immediately; «AD mode», autonomous, where the space is optimized to use it to the taste while the car advances alone.
During autonomous driving, the driver can select three different «travel experiences»: «Alone @ Home»; where all the elements are hidden to give more amplitude, including the central console; «Relax Layout», which places the driver\’s seat in “zero gravity” position, more relaxed and relaxed, while activating the multimedia system developed by Ubisoft; “The French Kiss”, in which the seats approach each other and rotate 15th to face more.
