Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: Test Drive

he Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is the new product of Porsche . The model, integrated into the Panamera family, explores a new concept of high performance vehicles . And as we have seen in a first contact, on Portuguese roads, it keeps intact the brand’s sporting spirit .

In this case, the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo proposes a more functional variant to the saloon in the hand of a behind, from the B pillar, completely redesigned. The concept suggests a body wagon station wagon , but without altering the external dimensions of the last Panamera.

Thus, Porsche materializes this new car with a length of 5,049 mm , a wheelbase of 2,950 mm and a width of 1,937, values identical to those of its catalog brother. Only the height varies, although the gain is practically imperceptible, since it only increases 5 mm.

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: more luggage

The most significant novelty of the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is the line of the roof, more elongated and falling behind in the style of a family car. This circumstance becomes reality in a more functional trunk . Its volume is 520 liters, that is, 20 more than in the Porsche Panamera . The difference can reach up to 50 liters when folding the rear seatbacks, reaching 1,390 liters. In the case of the hybrid variant, when housing the battery of the electrical system, the luggage rack is smaller: 425 liters.

Another added value of the Panamera Sport Turismo is that the loading mouth is placed in a lower position, at 63 cm from the ground, which improves the comfort at the time of introducing the luggage. The opening and closing of the gate is electric as standard . As an option, Porsche markets a load management system, consisting of two rails, four fastening eyes and a net.

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: with adaptive spoiler

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: Test DriveThe new model of the German manufacturer premieres an element that we will soon see in other products of the house, as for example in the new Porsche Cayenne that we have also tested recently. We are talking about a retractable roof spoiler capable of adapting to traffic conditions.

It is located in the upper part of the gate and its function is to generate greater aerodynamic load on the rear axle , up to 50 kg. It works according to the selected driving mode and speed. Thus, up to 170 km / h has an inclination of -7 degrees, with the aim of reducing wind resistance and optimizing consumption. From that speed, it adopts the Performance position with a positive 1 degree angle, increasing the stability. In both situations, the Sport and Sport Plus programs move you to that location when you exceed 90 km / h.

Finally, when the panoramic roof is opened, optionally, the spoiler is placed at an inclination of 26 degrees.

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: with five seats

Unlike the saloon, the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo variant is the first of this family to adopt three seats in the rear . However, the configuration of 4 1 , denomination used by the brand, is limited in that it offers two individual exterior spaces, of good size, and a central one for the use of a third and eventual passenger, in virtue of a much more space. reduced. This provision could also reach the Porsche Panamera , according to sources from Porsche in Spain. In any case, the customer can continue to order his vehicle with four seats.

In terms of functionality, the shape of the body favors a more comfortable access to the back , while extending the level of height for the head, loose. In the measure to rest the legs and interior width does not vary. The distance to the front seat is large, and the forms of this, narrowing in the upper area, favor an impression of spaciousness.

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: new technology

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: Test DriveThis new variant, the third of the range if we consider the short and long versions (Executive) of the sedan, benefits from the advances introduced in the second generation Panamera. Among them, has the so-called Porsche Advanced Cockpit that considers an analog and digital instrumentation; the tachometer is still entrusted to a large central clock, Porsche’s hallmark, decorated with two 7.0-inch screens with very varied information.

Another important element of the Panamera Sport Turismo are the capacitive panels of the central console , from where the air conditioning is controlled, driving switches or direct access to different functions. Complete the infotainment system a large 12.3-inch touch screen with gestural control and excellent resolution. In addition, there is no shortage of the latest connectivity systems with mobile phones and online services, incorporating the Connect Plus interface as standard.

When it comes to driving, the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo also includes a variety of technology. Like the active steering on the rear axle , the electronic stabilization of the PDCC Sport swing, the pneumatic suspension (standard on all versions and optional on Panamera 4 Sport Turismo) or the night vision assistant.

Special mention deserves the Porsche InnoDrive system . It is an advanced adaptive speed control that works based on the navigation data, as if it were an electronic co-pilot. Said system is able to foresee the optimum acceleration and deceleration values for the next three kilometers, also anticipating the moment of change or use of the displacement by inertia, and taking into account the speed limits and the rest of detected vehicles.

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: engines and driving impressions

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: Test DriveAt the moment, the offer of the new model is composed of five versions , with V6 and V8 petrol engines and two hybrids . The mechanics of access corresponds to the Panamera 4 Sport Turismo, associated with a 3.0 V6 turbo of 330 HP . Above are the Panamera 4S, with a V6 biturbo that generates 440 HP , and the Panamera Turbo, already with a 4.0 V8 also biturbo capable of yielding 550 HP . All equipped gearbox dual-clutch PDK , eight relations, and all-wheel drive.

In the first test of the new Porsche we have driven the latter. An engine that moves more than five meters of Sport Turismo with great sportsmanship and throwing a very high performance. On paper, it homologates a maximum speed of 304 km / h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in only 3.6seconds. In practice, shows a delivery of power very constant and almost immediate from the first stomp to the accelerator, at the expense of a high consumption, far from the 9.4 liters declared in mixed use.

More prestacional, and efficient, is the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid that we also had the chance to drive. It is the most ambitious plug-in hybrid step of the brand and comes to complement the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid (462 HP of combined power). This new motorization, available for both the saloon and the Sport Turismo, is embodied in the model of the most powerful saga. Not surprisingly, the combination of a twin-turbo V8 engine and an additional electric unit results in a power of 680 HP, in addition to an extraordinary maximum torque of 850 Nm.

Its hybrid concept derives from competition, taking the genes of the 918 Spyder , and the first consequence we see in its performance: 310 km / h maximum speed and just 3.4 seconds to do the 0 to 100 km / h. By default the car starts in electric E-Power mode, completely silent, and there are three other programs of operation: Hybrid Auto (combined management of the two engines), Sport and Sport Plus (in both the V8 is always active) . Additionally, there are the subprograms E-Hold (maintains the state of the load for later use) and E-Charge (the thermal propellant charges the battery).

The power offered by this hybrid is immense, and that despite the fact that from the inside, well isolated from noise and any irregularity of the asphalt, the actual speed of travel is not appreciated. In addition, the transition of operation between the combustion engine and the electric one is practically imperceptible. To conclude, the car offers an electric range of 50 kilometers (in the planned route we could not corroborate this range), which expands its possibilities of use in areas of restricted traffic and parking for ecological vehicles.

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: Test DriveThe battery, on the other hand, offers an energy capacity of 14.1 kWh , and can be charged in a domestic socket. According to the data provided by the brand, with an optional quick connector of 7.2 kW and 32 amps complete the process in 2.4 hours.

In the purely dynamic aspect, and this is extendable to all the mechanics, the Panamera Sport Turismo is one of the cars over five meters that most sports sensations transmit, if not the most. It is true that its suspension frame and tarp indicate a set-up in which comfort does not prevail so much (high in any case), but it shows a brilliant steering feel, a high agility and an outstanding braking capacity.

In this sense, the Sport Turismo versions raise the weight around 30 kilos with respect to the saloon (although such increase is not noticeable in the driving), so they equip with oversized disc brakes .

Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo: prices

The first deliveries of the new German model, from which orders are already accepted, will begin to take place during the month of November. In principle it is expected that between 15 and 35 percent of the demand, within the Panamera family, corresponds to Sport Turismo. The range starts at 109,088 euros , corresponding to the Panamera 4. The 4S rises to 133,800, while the Turbo goes to 182,899 euros. For its part, the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo goes on sale for 115,488 euros, and the Turbo S E-Hybrid for 193,291 euros.
