The Mazda CX-5 2017 is not a completely different car from the CX-5 2015 , although it has major changes in many of its mechanical components – such as chassis, suspension and engines – a different look and new equipment. The outer dimensions barely change: it measures 4.55 meters in length (5 mm less), 1.84 m in width (the same) and 1.68 m in height (5 mm more).
The most affordable version has a petrol engine of 165 hp, front-wheel drive and manual transmission -2.0 SKYACTIV-G-. It is on sale for 24 600 euros, a price higher than that of a Ford Kuga 1.5 Ecoboost 150 hp, virtually identical to that of a Renault Kadjar TCe 165 hp and lower than that of a Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 TSI 150 CV.
There is another 194 hp gasoline engine, called 2.5 SKYACTIV-G, which as a novelty has an automatic cylinder disconnection system . In the diesel range there are also two engines: 2.2 SKYACTIV-D 150 and 175 hp. These diesel engines have three technologies that improve their operation: High-Precision DE Boost Control, Natural Sound Frequency Control and Natural Sound Smoother.
I have briefly tested all the engines except the higher-power petrol (194 hp). I think the Diesel of 150 hp is the most recommended. With front-wheel drive and manual transmission, it is faster than the petrol with the same gearbox and the same traction system and does not give the feeling of being slower than the 175 HP Diesel with automatic transmission and traction at four wheels. It is an engine that also produces little noise and vibrations.
The gearshift that comes standard is six-speed manual, although in option there is an automatic torque converter available with the same number of ratios. The traction can be in the front wheels or in the four, except with the Diesel engine of 175 hp and the gasoline of 194 hp, which can only have full drive. The 2.0 SKYACTIV-G petrol engine gives 160 hp (5 hp less) when four-wheel drive is requested.
The CX-5 2017 is between 40 and 45 kilograms heavier than the 2015 model (depends on the version), has worse performance and a higher approved consumption. For example, with the 150 hp diesel engine, front-wheel drive and manual transmission, the CX-5 2017 needs 0.2 seconds more to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h and its average consumption is 0.4 l / 100 km higher. The same is true if you compare the petrol versions of 165 hp. Despite this, Mazda says that in real conditions the consumption of the new CX-5 is 4.4% lower.
The appearance of the cabin changes – mainly the center console – and there are more measures of soundproofing (the windshield is thicker, there are new seals on the doors that seal better and more insulation material). Mazda has improved some details to convey a higher quality feel, such as rubber bottoms in the front door recesses or a upholstery in the glove compartment. It has also improved ergonomics by raising the position of the manual shift lever by 4 centimeters (6 cm in the case of the automatic transmission) so that it is closer to the steering wheel.
The space for passengers has hardly changed. It is a car with a good amplitude, like most of its alternatives. The trunk volume is 477 liters, 14 more than the replaced model. The gate can have electric drive, a novelty in Mazda.
Mazda has incorporated the “G-Vectoring Control” function (GVC, is standard), which aims to improve guiding accuracy and smooth the longitudinal and transverse acceleration changes that arise when a curve is approached.
The names of the trim levels are different from those customarily used by Mazda in their models. In the CX-5 there are three: Origin, Evolution and Zenith. From the lowest level, Origin, are elements such as two-zone climate control, automatic activation of lights and windshield wipers, led lights and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The MZD Connect multimedia system is standard and has been updated. It is handled through a 7-inch screen and has a more advanced mobile device connectivity system, although at the moment there is no Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard on the Zenith level, it is associated with a new sound system with ten speakers from the specialist BOSE. The speakers are closer to the ears of the passengers.
The safety and attendance systems have been updated. The active speed programmer now has automatic start and stop function. This means that the CX-5 can by itself stop if the vehicle in front stops, due to, for example, a traffic light and then restart the vehicle without the driver having to step on the accelerator when the vehicle in front begins to move. This system can be used in a range of speeds between 0 and 200 km / h.
The traffic signal recognition system recognizes the speed limit signals and displays them to the driver through the head-up display . Of the latter there are two versions, one that projects the information on a plastic sheet and another – new Mazda – that projects directly on the windshield. Other safety systems that may have the CX-5 are warning dead vehicle vehicles , inadvertent lane alert (with steering intervention to correct the trajectory) and emergency braking assistant (which detects vehicle And pedestrians).
There are three types of headlights. Those included in the Origin level have LEDs for short and long range functions. The included in the Evolution level also turn in the curves and have the function of automatic change between short and long. Finally, the headlamps on the Zenith level have a set of 12 LEDs that are switched on and off independently in order to adapt the light beam to the front traffic and prevent glare from other drivers and in turn give the maximum Lighting possible.
