The Stelvio is the first all-terrain vehicle in Alfa Romeo. Its platform , with modifications – same battle but greater height to the ground and width of ways -, is the same that the one of the Giulia .
It is on sale from € 35,926 with a 150 horsepower diesel engine, rear wheel drive and eight speed automatic gearboxes. There are also two other diesel engines, 181 and 209 horses. There are two gasoline, 201 and 280 horses. The QV version of 510 horses will arrive later ). There is no provision for a hybrid version to exist.
In comparison to other models, the 2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio offers dynamic qualities that will appreciate those drivers who value the agile reactions and the immediate response of the management. Although its suspension is firm, it is a comfortable vehicle. On the other hand, it can not have some elements of equipment that can have their rivals and certain practical details are worse solved. The version we tested for over a week has been the 280-horsepower gasoline engine.
The more economical version has a much higher price than a similar power Škoda Kodiaq , automatic gearshift and front-wheel drive. A Mitsubishi Outlander or a Honda CR-V , both with automatic and all-wheel drive, are a bit cheaper. In turn, the Stelvio is less expensive than a Volvo XC60, a BMW X3 and an Audi Q5 – this is only available with all-wheel drive.
If we choose models similar to the Stelvio with 210-horsepower Diesel engine, the situation is similar to the previous case: there are a few less cheaper, while the luxurious alternatives (such as the Jeep Cherokee , Mercedes-Benz GLC , Jaguar F-Pace , the BMW X3 or the Audi Q5) have a higher price , from 4×4 to 4.75 meters in length, with diesel engine between 190 and 225 horsepower and automatic gearshift) .
If we look for alternatives to the top version of the Alfa Romeo (with 280 horsepower petrol engine), in this case models like the Porsche Macan or the Audi Q5 appear. The equipment of both competitors may be higher and their quality of finish is more careful, although, dynamically, only the Porsche is comparable.
The advantage with which Alfa Romeo wants to face its competitors is to offer a driving much more similar to that of a (good) tourism than any of them. Dynamically it has seemed as good as the Macan. Of what we have no doubt, is that in this section is above the majority. In addition, the Stelvio has a comfortable suspension (not soft) and the cabin is well insulated from the outside. As with the Giulia, the Stelvio has a very fast steering that, once you catch the quiet (maybe there is someone who needs a period of adaptation), makes driving in the city more comfortable (you have to turn little the steering wheel for twisting the wheels) and is very accurate on the road.
Regarding their quality of finishes is closer to the models that cost less than the most expensive. Although it has details of the models of greater price – like the wood or the aluminum with which you can decorate some zones of the passenger compartment; – all other coating materials are similar to those that, for example, can be found on a Mazda CX-5 .
In the equipment there are missing elements – useful or not – offered by models that Alfa Romeo wants to compete with, such as a projected information system on the windshield , ventilated or massage seats, headlamps with an advanced adaptive lighting system of xenon, and illuminate well but they are not exceptional), a higher quality rear camera or a set of cameras to give a zenith vision, a system of automatic parking, zones of wireless recharge for mobile (although yes it has several USB shots distributed by the passenger compartment) or independent air conditioning settings for the rear seats.
It is available with four levels of equipment, which are: Stelvio (so-called simpler), Super, Speciale and First Edition. The First Edition version, which will only be temporarily available, is equipped with a series of leather seats with all electrical and heating settings, multifunction steering wheel, sequential aluminum shift cams, wood inserts, a multimedia system with 8 , 8 inches and the 7 “for the instrument cluster. The wheels are 20 inches in diameter and the brake calipers are red.
Alfa Romeo has used aluminum in some components like the suspensions, some parts of the brakes (the discs are made of ceramic material in the Stelvio Quadrifoglio), the wheel arches and the tailgate.
During the time we tried the Stelvio gasoline (ten days) the engine failure light went off and disappeared without touching anything after an hour after leaving the car parked. The copilot’s power windows did not always go down or go up with a tap, the volume of the radio was blocked after hanging a phone call with hands-free and the trunk door often did not respond to the opening with the remote.
