Rumors about an SRT -prepped Dodge Dart have been floating around ever since the compact sedan was unveiled at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show . But hopes of a successor for the Neon SRT-4 – phased out in 2005 – were somewhat crushed when SRT CEO Ralph Gilles said at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show that the brand has yet to find the right powertrain for the car.
Let’s start out small description with the interior and its exterior. While the 2016 Dodge Dart SRT4 will certainly have a style of its own, it will still be based on the current generation, so the external dimensions and most of the interior are going to be the same with those of the current car. However, the design of the exterior is likely going to be closer to the new Charger rather than the current Dart which would make for a more aggressive car all around. The interior will also feature more upmarket equipment like leather upholstery as standard or even sport seats and a satellite navigation system.
Months have passed since we’ve heard anything about the Dart SRT, but it appears Dodge finally came to its senses and started working on a high performance compact. The good news came straight from the Fiat Chrysler alliance, who has just unveiled its massive five-year production plan.
With the SRT brand now back under Dodge , a host of new models will be built by 2018, with a high performance version of the Dart among them. Although the company has yet to confirm whether the compact will roll out with a SRT4 badge, it did say the vehicle will arrive in late 2016, right after the current-generation Dart gets its mid-cycle refresh.
Dodge Dart SRT4 2016 specs
The engine in the 2016 Dodge Dart SRT4 is going to be the most important part in the car. This is likely going to be a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline 4 which will make quite a lot of power. Experts say that it will provide more than 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque which would allow for some impressive performance from the Dart. This engine is going to be mated to Dodge’s new 9-speed automatic and to either a front-wheel-drive system or a more sensible all-wheel-drive one. The latter would make more sense considering the massive amount of torque from that turbocharged engine. Performance will be on par with other hot hatches and fast saloons out there, so a 0 to 60 MPH time of less than 6 seconds and a top speed of more than 140 MPH should be standard.
The big news is that the brawny version of the sedan will be motivated by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, just like the Caliber SRT4 and the Neon SRT4, and sold with an all-wheel-drive configuration. Specific details aren’t available at the time of this writing, but expect for the Dart SRT to get a beefed-up 2.4-liter Tigershark engine tuned to deliver at least 260 horsepower.
2016 Dodge Dart SRT4 price, release date
Many people say that this new model is going to be the baby Hellcat because many expect a lot of power from it. We don’t know how much exactly but we can safely assume that the engine in it will likely have more than 250 horsepower which is the average for the hot hatchbacks class. Another aspect about the car that is not ready yet is its price. However, we can say for sure that this Dodge Dart SRT4 2016 will cost more than $30,000 which would be quite in line with the Focus RS and the new Golf R.
Even though it is going to be a 2016 model, Dodge announced that the 2016 Dodge Dart SRT4 is going to be released by the end of 2016, meaning it is still in development.
Naturally, the sportier version of the Dart will also arrive with a host of visual upgrades (check out our rendering here ), including a pair aggressive bumpers, a larger apron intake, a rear diffuser, and probably a hood scoop. Under-the-skin improvements are likely to include a stiffer, performance-tuned suspension and additional driving modes.
